KUMARA NOTES
(Our Own Cnrmsnondent'l. KUMARA, October 6. On Sunday last the Kumara Tennis Club held its opening day for the 1948-49 season. Many visitors and players from neighbouring clubs were present and play was conducted in the form of a three-round Yankee tournament. The winners were: Mrs J. Teen and N, Kerr. Miss M. Birss and M. Flynn were runners up. Mrs G. Brown and Mrs J. Prefidergast left by Tuesday’s bus for Christchurch, en route to visit their brother in Napier. Miss Ruth Collins, of Ashburton, was a visitor to Kumara last weekend.
Mr and Mrs W. Irons have left to reside in Christchurch. The Rev L. Collins and Mr and Mrs C. Evendeh left this week. to attend the annual Synod in Christchurch.
A very enjoyable afternoon was spent last week-end to celebrate the fifteenth birthday of the Kumara Women’s Institute. Games and competitions were held and the president Mrs Ollerenshaw, spoke on the work and help of the Institute. Mr J. Cooney, of Auckland, who has been competing in cycle races at Dunedin and Timaru, is spending a few days in Kumara prior to competing in the Waimate-Christchurcn race on Saturday next.
