GOLF N.Z. TEAM BEAT WEST AUSTRALIA
(Received October 5, 11.20 p.m.) MELBOURNE, October 5. The New Zealand golfers to-day, with the aid of two former Australian open champions, defeated Western Australia by four games to three in an unofficial match at the metropolitan links. The match was played to the requirements of a seven-a-side intei’-State competition, and, as the New Zealand team consists of only five players, Alex Russel and Ivo Whitton were co-opted to fill the vacancies. Russel captained the Victorian team which toured New Zealand in 1930, and he won the Australian open championship in 1924. Whitton is a former holder of five Australian open and two Australian amateur titles.
The match was “a friendly encounter,” arranged to sharpen the New Zealanders for the Australian amateur and open championships beginning on October 11th. and 18th. respectively. Although • the matches were not played in a true competitive spirit, a defeat of Silk (New Zealand), by E. R. Hall was surprising. Hornabrook (New Zealand) was square with L. Harker after sixteen holes. He was unlucky to be dead stvmied on the seventeenth green, and he was defeated, one down. Woon (New Zealand), who was playing for the first time at the metropolitan links, did an exceptional round of seventy-one.
Scores were:— J. P. Hornabrook (N.Z.) lost to L. Harker, one down. R. H. Glading (N.Z.) defeated R. Curral, one up. B. Silk (N.Z.) lost to E. R. Hall, one down.
D. L. Woon (N.Z.) defeated J. Banting, two and one. G. P. Robert defeated D. Paxton, two and one.
Ivo Whitton defeated R. Robers, four and three.
R. Russel lost to L. Taylor, five and three.
