Inspectors Check Size of Beer Glasses In Wellington
WELLINGTON, Oct. 4 Price Control enforcement officers began a city-wide check to see that Wellington hotels are observing the new price order for beer and spirits. The order, which ‘was originally intended to become effective on August 1 last, was deferred till Friday after representations were made by licensed victuallers’ associations, which claimed that publicans could not get the requisite supplies of lOoz glasses for 6d draught beers. Because of the limited staff of the enforcement section, it will be some days before all Wellington hotels can be checked it was stated yesterday. However, officers were reported to be “right on the job” to see that the terms of the order are carried out by licensees. FIVE OUNCES FOR SIXPENCE! It is understood that an investigation will be made into allegations that some West Coast publicans whose hotels are near racecourses, are selling soz beers for 6d.
Representatives of the Wellington Licensed Victuallers’ Association attended a federation conference at Dunedin.
Many city hotels have been serving lOoz glasses of draught beer for 6d., lor some time. Some have retained the 12oz measures at 7d., but from now on, a customer is supposed to receive a lOoz glass for 6d unless he specifically asks for a larger size and pays the extra penny.
