Russian Protest At Berlin

(Rec. 9.10). LONDON, October 4. The Soviet Military Governor in Germany, Lieutenant-General Mihail Dratvin, has protested to the British and American Deputy-Military Governors, Major-General Neville Brownjohn and Major-General George Hays, against “frequent violations of basic flight discipline in the Berlin area and the air corridors”. . „ The Soviet Information Bureau said that General Dratvin had cited six hundred and fifty-six violations by British planes, and eighty-six violations by American planes between August 20 and October 1. The yiolations, it says, mainly consisted of flights at prohibited heights over Soviet airfields. General Dratvin, it adds, has requested immediate measures to stop the alleged violations.

RUSSIA! GOT ONLY OLDEST JET ENGINES FROM BRITAIN

(Recevied October 4, 7.55 p.m.) WASHINGTON, October 3. Sir Stafford Cripps said to-day that the only jet engines Russia has received from Britain were “some of our oldest types.” Sir Stafford Cripps’s statement followed the disclosure in the American magazine “Aviation,” this week, that Russia has a new fighter aircraft with a speed range of 630 to 660 miles an hour, powered by a Rolls Royce Nene jet engine. Sir Stafford Cripps said that Britain, last winter, placed “some of the oldest types of jet engines” on the free list for export. “The Russians bought a certain number from one manufacturer, and so far as I know, those were the only jet engines we have ever shipped to Russia —and the only ones that will be shipped.”

LABOUR M.P’s. PROPOSAL FOR BERLIN SETTLEMENT

LONDON, Oct. 3.

A four-point compromise settlement for the Berlin dispute, which would “lead to the restoration of land communications with Berlin and open the door to a general settlement,” was proposed by the Left Wing Labour member of Parliament, Mr Konni Zilliacus, who is an opponent of Mr. Bevin’s foreign policy, in a speech at Haltwhistle. Mr Zilliacus’s points were:— 1. The nationalisation of the basic industries, transport and finance with trade union participation in their management is essential to making Germany safe for peace and democracy. > 2. The Western Powers and Soviet should share in the international control of the Ruhr and of the railways and waterways and coal and steel production throughout Germany. 3. The Western Allies should agree on ceasing to obstruct unity of action between the German workingclass parties and to drop their discrimination against Communist and Socialist Unity parties, in exchange for th e Russians’ allowing the Social Democrats to operate in the Soviet zone and agreeing to joint measures for guaranteeing freedom and _ justice to all anti-Fascist political parties. 4. There should be a moratorium on reparations until German industrial production has reached 70 per cent, of the pre-war level, after which 10 per cent, should be allocated for 10 to 15 years for reparations, including reimbursement • of the Western ''Allies for the help given to Germany.
