Mr J. B. Kent, M.P., leaves this morning on return to Wellington.

Two residents of Taylorville, Mr and Mrs R. Steel, left yesterday for a holiday in Carterton.

Before leaving for Christchurch on Sunday, the Minister of Mines, Mr A. McLagan, met members of the Runanga State Miners’ Union.

A New Zealander who- gained the degree of doctor of philosophy at the age of 24 arrived in Wellington on Sunday from England on the Tamaroa. He is Doctor F. M. Todd, formerly a junior lecturer at Victoria University College. He took his Ph.D. degree in England, at London University this year.

Mrs A. Carey, of Springston, a member of the Canterbury Aero Club, flew solo recently. She is the first woman pupil at Harewood to go solo since the war. Mrs Carey’s husband, who is also a member of the club, served with the Royal New Zealand Air Force during the war, Miss Judy Howden, who served with the Air Transport Auxiliary during the war, recently obtained her B (commercial pilot’s) licence at Harewood.

The wedding took place recently at St. Mary’s Church, Hokitika, of Eileen Alice, elder daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Manera, of Ross, and Edmund, eldest son of, Mr. and the late Mrs. T. A. Keown of Hokitika. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Father Kelly, of Ross, who also celebrated the Nuptial Mass. He was assisted by Rev. Father Lordan, ot Hokitika.

The death occurred suddenly at Hokitika of Mrs. Elizabeth Imelda Murphy, of Ranfurly, Otago. Besides her husband she leaves one daughter, Mrs. E. Nolan (Okuru), and five sons, Thomas, Jack and Edward (Ranfurly), and Francis (Mataura) and Gerald (Dunedin).

The 40 delegates on Saturday elected the following officers for the New Zealand Licensed Victuallers’ Association.—President Mr F. H. Drewitt, (Wellington), re-elected; vice-presi-dents, Messrs J. M. MacKenzie (Canterbury), T. F. Mackie (Otago), T. P. Smale (Poverty Bay), all re-elected; treasurer, Mr S. Dunn (Wellington), re-elected; emergency executive Messrs F. H. Drewit, S. Dunn, T. Coltman, D. Sloan, R. McMullan, C. J. McFarland, E. J. Empson (Canterbury, F. J. Fay (Dunedin), A. Beban (Greymouth)', T. P. Smale (Poverty Bay) C. G. Rhimes (Wanganui) and W. H. Steel (Wairarapa).
