BASKETBALL West Coast Retains Kawatiri Cup

No day specially selected could have provided better basketball weather than Saturday, when the final match of the season, the challenge of Buller for the Kawatiri Cup, held by the West Coast team, was played. Coast opened up play very smartly with a clever .centre interception by M. Anderson, and within the first minute of play three goals were scored, t-e Coast forwards playing very well. Coast 3; Buller 0. Though Buller centres worked hard and completely outclassed Coast in this third until half-time, the score remained in Coast’s favour, as Buller forwards seemed unable to handle their ball in to score. Coast 11; Buller 4.

A grand awakening on the part of Coast centres greatly improved the speed of play, and Coast kept their lead until the end, though at no time could they have a rest between scores. For Coast, M. Anderson played a strong centre game. D. Clarke and A. Caldwell were outstanding in field work in the forward third, and F. Meldrum made some good defensive moves. Euller had an excellent centre third, N. Brown being particularly good. E. Fyfe and R. Caldwell are very promising defence, and A. Walker was the best of the forwards on the day, this being the weakest third of the team. In the second half, play was of very high speed and standard, infringements being few, and quick interceptions frequent. The Coast team were definitely put on their mettle, and scored only one more goal than Buller, the final count being Coast 19; Buller 11. Other results of matches were:--Blaketown B 12, Taylorville A 5. St. Mary’s B 8, G.T.H.S. C2 4. Buller 4, Coast B 12. Hokitika juniors 10, Grey-Reefton combined juniors 13.
