Fernmoor’s Engines Cannot be Repaired at Sea
P.A. AUCKLAND, October 1. Engineers on the disabled motorship, “Fernmoor,” have struggled continuously to free the jammed engine while the vessel is being towed by the motorship “Palana,” from the MidPacific to Auckland, but they have made no impression. The task of repairing the damaged engine is hopeless, the ship’s master, Captain Lamb, said in a radio message to-day. Captain Lamb praised the fine work of the “Palana,” under the command of Captain Spurr, and commended all hands on both vessels on maintaining the tow during the last heavy blow, laconically adding “both crews were rather wet.” Yesterday’s weather was fine and the tow averaged five knots but “tonight’s sky looks threatening.” The vessels are still more than 1,400 miles from Auckland.
