Leader of Stern Gang Detained by Jewish Police
HAIFA, Sept. 30.
Friedman Yellin, head of the Stern Gang, was detained in 'Haifa to-day. The Israeli police had been seeking Yellin since the assassination of Count Bernadotte. He was in possession of forged military documents when detained. The police are reported to have found documents throwing new light on Stern Gang activities. “No 1 terrorist,Yellin was believed to be attempting to leave the country when arrested with his right-hand man. 28-year-old Mathetiahu Shmuelivitz. who was held a prisoner in Acre fortress during the British administration. They were taken along with a score of Stern Gang leaders, who evaded capture during the manhunt for Count Bernadotte’s assassin, although the police detained 200 “smaller fry.” who are still at a camp near Tel Aviv. The police discovered in one of Yellin’s six hide-outs a small cache, including several revolvers, ammunition and £1750 in cash. An Israeli Government spokesman said: “We are very glad. We have more interest than anybody in capturing Yellin.”
