Mr R. R. King left .by plane yesterday for Wellington.

Mr W. Meates snr., is visiting Wellington.

Mr T T. Ropiha, of Hawkes Bay, has been appointed Under-Secretary of Maori Affairs.

Mr W. Hannam, of Frankton Junction is visiting Greymouth for the Blaketown Football Club’s silver jubilee.

A cable from Rome states: Antonio Pellicano was born in 1848. At Riggio di Calabria to-day he married Mrs. Cattuso, a 63-year-old widow.

Mr G. T. Shepherd, of Auckland, has been transferred on promotion to the position- of Cable Overseer at the Chief Post Office, in Greymouth.

Mr A. J. Harper has been appointed Under-Secretary of Internal Affairs. He replaces Mr J. W. Heenan who will retire at the conclusion of the Royal Tour next year.

Mr Robert Buchanan, of •Blackball, who is at present a patient in the Grey River Hospital, is making good progress and is expecting to be discharged in the near future.

The retirement, on superannuation at the end of October of Mr S. H. Smith, deputy director of accounts for the Post Office, was announced by the Postmaster-General, Mr F. Hackett, to-day. Mr Smith served in Wellington, New Plymouth, Auckland and Gisborne.

Princess Elizabeth will return from Balmoral with the King and Queen next week. She will spend some time with the Duke in Edinburgh at their country home near Sunningdale. She will move into Buckingham Palace towards the beginning of November to make preparations for the birth of her child, which is expected to take place in the middle of November. The Duke is to be placed on half pay at his own request. He is now on leave from the Navy, having completed the Naval Staff coui'se. His future with the Royal Navy is now' under consideration. He has indicated his wish to be at the side of Princess Elizabeth next year when during the months of the Royal tour of New Zealand and Australia, she will be fulfilling many engagements on behalf of the King. It is emphasised that this does not mean that the Duke is leaving the Navy.
