ASHBURTON’S STORMS WORSE YESTERDAY

Heavy Hail Stops Power Supply P.A. ASHBURTON, Sept. 30. A severe electrical storm hit Ashburton at 12.30 p.m. to-day, causing some damage. Following heavy thunder and vivid lightning, a hail storm broke, and, within a few minutes th e town was under a mantle of white. In the outskirts of the town the hail lay to a depth of an inch, but in the town area the depth was nearer to two inches, and against those buildings with a southerly aspect, the hail piled up to a fair depth. Coming in the lunch hour, the hail caught many people as they were returning to work, and they suffered a drenching. The power failed soon after the storm broke. As a result those industries which had no standby gas plants were forced to cease operations for a considerable period. The telegraphic service also ceased functioning. This week has ben a black one, with the storm following severe nor’-west gales.
