CUSTOMS REVENUE AT GREYMOUTH STILL BUOYANT

Up Nearly £BOOO for Half-year

Indicating the buoyancy of trade the customs returns for Greymouih for the first six months of the present financial year, up to yesterday, show an increase of £7964 over the same period last year. At the end of the first quarter of the year, the increase had been £lO3BB, mainly due to a big increase in sales tax. but this has receded during the past quarter by nearly £6OOO. Despite this, however, revenue from other sources shows an improvement, the increased figures, being: Customs £6949; Beer Duty £4088; and Petrol Tax £971. Sales Tax declined by £419 in the past six months, and Gold Tax by £3697, the latter being largely due to the removal of the tax during the last month’s returns.. During September, the Beer Duty increased by over £lBOO, but this was due to the fact, that five pay-in dates were included for the month. Petrol Tax, despite the rationing of petrol, increased during the month by nearly £lOO. In the July-September quarter, the increase has been £5OO. The removal of the Gold Tax will naturally result in reductions in tax collections during the remainder of the present year. In September’ alone, the loss of revenue, as compared with September 1947, was £2209. HALF-YEARLY FIGURES
