Fear of Leases Being Cancelled By N.Z. Government

WELLINGTON, Sept. 30. Mr A. P. O’Shea, General Secretary of the Federated Farmers’ addressing the Hutt Valley branch of the federation, said that under an amendment to the Land Sales Act, the Government, by being able to terminate leaseholds, was taking power for the first time in the history of any Government in New Zealand, to break its own contracts. It should be realised that a very small amendment could make this? provision apply to all property so far as the State was concerned, and it could easily be made to apply to the leases of State houses or, in fact, to the lease of any property by an individual from the State. The farmer was asking for no better and no worse conditions than applied to anyone else in the country. He did not want any favours, but he did want a fair deal, which at the present time he had not got.
