BURKE’S CREEK BATHHOUSE

[To the Editor]. Sir,—ln a leading article of the “Inangahua Times”, of lasit week, the Inangahua Miners’ Union was charged with being extremely discourteous for not offering an invitation to the general public to the official opening of the new bathhouse on Saturday, September 18. This much belated criticism arose out of an advertisement in the "Grey River Argus” on Friday and Saturday, September 17 and 18, inviting members, and their wives, only, to the function. Had the reporter concerned the intelligence to enquire the reason for the offending advertisement, I am sure his pent-up feelings could have been relieved. Had it not been for the evil machinations of the Union concerned, sir, I very much doubt whether there would have been an opening ceremony. Sufficient to say, sir, the advertisement had a dual meaning. Mention was made that quite a few individuals must have gate-crashed, but, I am led to believe, the Mines Department issued a public invitation, per the medium of the screen, at the local theatre. Should this be the case, I contend it is no fault of our organisation that the Mines Department should choose this form of advertising. The opening ceremony itself was thoroughly enjoyed by all. but, in the ooinion of many, there was an oversight on the part of speakers generally in not mentioning the Government, who made this amenity possible for the minors. Finally, sir, the Inangahua Miners’ Union wishes, at this late period, to add their compliments to the builders for the erection of an amenity long waited for. Their representative and national delegate d ; d not have the onnortunity at the opening, and no doubt' the charge of being extremely discourteous could aptly be placed in other directions.

Thanking you, I am, etc.. E. J. RILEY, Secretary, Inangahua Miners’ Union
