REEFTON, September 20,

An alarm of lire was sounded on Saturday morning .when it was round that the ceiling of the bakehouse adjoining Mrs. R. Cochrane’s tea-room., was ablaze. Prompt action by the brigade resulted in the outoreaK being quelled with only slight damage, chiefly from water. On Saturday, the new bath-house at the State-owned Burke’s Creek colliery was handed over by the contractors, Messrs Kelly and Party. Members of the management, union officials and the general public were present when congratulatory speeches were made.

In a , triangular contest for the Blackwater Shield, when teams from Totara Flat, Ikamatua and Waitahi; Clubs met at Waitahu on Sunday. Waitahu was successful in wresting the trophy from the Totara Flat Club which had withstood a number of challenges in the past two years. On Saturday and Sunday next, the Waitahu Golf Club will hold the In< angahua Championships. Large en tries have already been received, and it appears as though all West Coast and Buller clubs will be represented. Entries close with the secretary, Mr. C. D. Doyle, at 9 p.m. to.-night. The Inangahua rugby representatives paid a visit to Murchison at the week-end, where they were defeated by the local representatives by 13 points to nil. Members of the party are loud in their praise of the hospitality of the Murchison people, and hope to pay a return visit early next season. The Reefton Bowling Club will officially open its green on Sunday, October 17. The green is at present in capital order —old members say it is better than ever—and with a large number of new members expected, a record season is anticipated.
