TAXI LICENSE GRANTED NELSON CREEK OPERATOR
Two applications for a taxi license, and private hire cab authority, from operators in the Nelson /Creek district, were considered by the No. 3 Licensing Authority (Mr P. J. Skoglund) yesterday. William Fisher was granted the license against Mary Ellen Nyberg. Fisher, for whom Mr A. M. Jamieson appeared, said he had carried on business at Nelson Creek for ten years. He had been conducting a taxi service for the convenience of the people for about nine years. The passenger service had been operating since the war. He had also carried hospital cases. Mr C. R. McGinley, for Mrs Nyberg: You know that Mrs Nyberg had an application for a license? Yes. And yours was lodged after her’s? —That is correct.
Would it be correct to say that she has done more urgent work in the district than you?—l would not say that. Do you meet all the rail-cars? — No, only when there are passengers. To Mr Jamieson, Fisher said he had been carrying on since .1939, and Mrs Nyberg began after that. . She was the daughter of the original proprietor, a Mr Williams, who died after which the service went out of operation. Sarah Williams, mother of Mrs Nyberg, said her daughter had no intention of interfering with Mr Fisher. She wanted to do legally what she had been doing as a favour. Mr C. D. Pederson, Transport Department): Who will drive the car at night?—My daughter. She can’t. No woman is allowed to drive a taxi at' night. Mrs Williams said she did not know thisL. NOT A LIVING Mr Skoglund said the natural thing to do would be to give the license to the man operating the service. Mrs Nyberg was not conducting the service for a living, and there was not room for two taxis at Nelson Creek. Mrs Nyberg’s application would be refused and Fisher granted a license. Later Fisher was granted a continuous passenger license (Nelson C'reek-Greymouth), for one trip a week from Nelson Creek to Blackball on Sunday nights.
