Escaped Prisoner Faces Many Theft Charges
P.A. OPOTIKI, September 20. Arrested near Te Teko, in the Whakatane district on Friday, '■ George Ahitahi Duncan appeared before Justices of the Peace in the Opotiki Police Court to-day to face numerous charges. On a charge of conversion of a car at Auckland, he was remanded to Auckland on September 27. On three other charges of the theft of explosives and other articles from a Public Works hut at Waimana, the conversion of a bicycle at Waiotahi, and the conversion of a horse at Waimana, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three months’ hard labour. On each charge the sentences are to be cumulative. Duncan was further charged with escaping from the Opotiki Prison; thefts from a cowshed at Kutarere; breaking, entering Steve Piacun’s fish shop at Opotiki; thefts from the same: and stealing clothing at Onefru. He also pleaded guilty to these charges and was committed to the Auckland Supreme Court for sentence.
