Accommodation Plan at Greymouth Technical High School
Additional accommodation for the Greymouth Technical High School was referred to in a letter received last evening from the Department of Education. It was stated that with the increase in the future provision may have to be made for handling 700 pupils. Discounting, this, the Principal (Mr. W. M. Stewart) said that at a conservative estimate, he could not see the school settling down to much over 625 pupils. He suggested that the plan provide for a block of four classrooms, instead of two as planned. If they could get the four rooms, with an assembly hall, a library, arts and crafts room and a gymnasium, they would have a compact school. Mr. Stewart said, in reference to the grounds, that there was not a football ground. It was for cricket and parades, etc. It was known that they had no chance of gaining control of the Recreation Ground. It was not that they could not go on the ground, but they could not ask the Board to spend its money, time and attendance on ground over which they would have no control. Mr. F. L. Turley said the ground outside was used probably half a dozen times, except at the week-end, and a school, if it insisted on the progress of the school, would have to use part of the ground. The chairman (Mr. D. S. Kennedy), said the plan was a good one, and they should hammer at it.
Mr. Turley agreed that if they started modifying the plan, they would get nothing. It was decided to write to the Department, asking for the original plan, when the matter would again be discussed. SCHOOL TO BE PAINTED.
In view of the proposed visit of Royalty, next year, the chairman informed the meeting that it was time the school was repainted. He added that the front of the school, and the interior woodwork was badly in need of attention. He said the quadrangle was coming on, and that the upper portion was almost ready for use. Mr. Turley moved that the whole of the outside ’of the school, and the woodwork inside be painted, and that tenders be called for the work. The motion was agreed to. The resignation of Mr. W. L. Hughes, as part-time teacher, was received.
