Freighter Stranded South of Florida
NEW YORK, September 19. With 73 persons aboard, including six passengers, the British freighter, “Loch Monar,” sent S.O.S. messages, saying that she had struck a reef and was breaking up in heavy seas 0000 yards off Little Cayman Island, in the hurricane area, centred about 50 J miles south of Miami. . . She is hard aground and is being lashed by gale-force winds, high seas, and continuous rain. . A hole has been knocked in the forward part of the hull and part i>f the vessel is flooded. The Loch Monai radio reports: "It is rough as hell. C9 Uffited d States’ . Naval ships have been “alerted” in case they are needed for rescue. A tug from Jamaica is hurrying to the scene, but is not expected till to-morrow morning.
