Howe Unplaced in Craiglea Slakes at Flemington

MELBOURNE, Sept. 19. > The crack New Zealand gallopet, Howe, made his Australian debut at Flemington on Saturday in the w.t.a. C'raiglea Stakes. The result was—Lungi (J. Purtell) 1, Beau Gem (W. Briscoe) 2; Chanak (W. Williamson) 3. Beau Gem. immediately took command, set a terrific pace out in front, and endeavoured to lead throughout. Howe made a brilliant beginning and on settling down dropped in behind Beau Gem on the rails. Chanak quickly moved up to be in second place equal with Howe, then coming Vantage, Perm. Fresh Boy and Heroic Princes, with the other closely bunched. Passing the five Beau Gem had opened up a break of four lengths on Howe and Heroic Prince who were just ahead of Chanak, galloping easily,' with Fresh Boy moving fast around the outside. Racing to the half mile Howe had dropped back several places and Heroic Prince had assumed command. At the three, and approaching the turn Beau Gem and Heroin Prince,.were together in front from Perm, Chanak, Fresh Boy, Vantage, Howe, Lungi coming fast from ithe rear, and the rest a fair way back, headed by Robert Bruce. Desperately ridden by Purtell, Lungi came away at the distance to win comfortably from Beau Gem and Chanak. Robert Bruce and Howe were almost together in fourth place. Then followed Vantage, Fresh Boy and Perm. The Hill Stakes (w.f.a.) at Rosehill resulted: Dark Marne (K. Ward) 1; Karachi (W. Cook) 2; Proctor (D. Munro) 3.

Stamen tried to win all the way but tired badly and dropped out of the race at the three. Karachi made a great effort but was not equal to overtaking Dark Marne, who outstayed the field. Dark Marne is now a firm favourite for the Metropolitan.

The C. M. Marks Stakes resulted: The Groom (E. Doon) 1; Titanic (A. Mulley) 2; Denali (E. Fordyce) 3.
