North Win Railway Inter-Island Match P.A. ' NAPIER, Sept.- 19 A try within a few minutes of the end of the game enabled the North to beat the South in the inter-island Railway Rugby match at Napier on Saturday. The final score was 9 points to 6 North’s favour. The South hooker, W. Muir, gained the ball from most of the scrums. A. Murphy (Otago), and N. Munnings (Southland) were the best workers in tight play, while G. Drew (Takapau) was the best loose forward in the game. The best back on the field was L. Miller (Wanganui). Scorers for the North were Smith,. Miller and Radovanovich (tries), while Lawrence kicked two penalties for. the South.

Coast Wins in

Matches at Christchurch

Two Greymouth third grade teams had wins in Christchurch on Saturday, Celtic defeating Marist (Christchurch) by 12 points to 8, at Lancaster Park South, and Cobden beating Linwood by 22 points to nil. Marist in their game led 8-6 at half-time.

W. and J. Cadigan combined well in the live-eighths. R. Bellamy played a good game at full-bacj< till he went off during the second spell. J. Sullivan and D. Burke were the best of a hard-working Celtic pack, while D. Ffahlert was the outstanding back.

J. and IV. Cadigan scored tries for Marist, J. Cadigan converting one'. For Celtic P. Costelloe and D. Kelly scored tries, D. O’Callaghan kicking two penalties.

Player’s 19 Points I. Hay with a score of 19 of the Cobden teams 22 points against Linwood, was the outstanding player on the field. T. Colville scored the other try. x - ■ '■ The Linwood forwards worked hard in the first spell to hold Cobden 6-0. In the second spell Hay ran through the whole Linwood team in a run that started in his own territory. Well fed by his second fiveeighth, J. De Goldie, Hay shot through the Linwood backs in speedy swerving dashes. N. Curtis, P. Frankpitt and M. Guthrie played well in the Cobden pack, who gave their backs a feast of the ball. D. James, showed up in the Linwood pack, and played a solid game.

Southland Sub-Unions Defeat Nelson

P.A. NELSON, Sept. 19. Playing bright and open Rugby the Southland Sub-Unions’ team defeated Nelson yesterday by thirty points to eight. Nelson had playing conditions much to their liking, but were unable to take advantage of them. Nelson were unfortunate in shaving to field a team below their best strength. Four Nelson players had to be replaced during the game as the result of injuries. ■ Tries for Southland were scored by McDonald, D. Smeaton, Guttery, Woods and Smith, two were converted by Smeaton, who also kicked a penalty. Gorton converted one try and kicked a penalty. For Nelson Bryant kicked a penalty goal and converted a try by Tait.
