The West Coast Fire Brigades’ Demonstration will be held at Ross on November 26 and 27, when all West Coast firemen will compete.
A Sydney cable states that in the district hospital at Narrabiri, New South Wales, a baby boy weighed at birth was 151 b Biozs, and measured two feet 3h inches. He is believed to have set an Australian record.
At the week-end Wellington taxis 1 began the use of the radio telephone. Orders are being now sent by Wellington Co-op. Taxis Ltd., to two owners and all their taxis will be equipped. in view of the City Council’s decision to recommend the Metropolitan Licensing Authority to. t allow fifty more taxis to operate in the city.

The Greymouth Harbour Board Shield for the 1947-4 SI season was awarded to Blaketown School by the Canterbury Education Board on Friday. Letters of appreciation are to’ be sent to all other West Coast schools shown to have carried out good work for the Agricultural Club. Messrs F. L. Turley and J. F. With the rising of the tide yesterday morning, the banks of several West Coast streams were lined with whitebait fishers, the conditions being favourable, with bright sunshine. No very considerable run was reported, but locally catches were retailed at better than 5s per pint. The price in other places is stated to have been below that figure.

It was also agreed to hold trials on Lake Brunner during the third week-end in November, to choose the boat to represent the West Coast in the Moffat Cup at Auckland.
The fine week-end and dry ground conditions yesterday, were responsible for a. great many scrub fires in the countryside, the object being to obtain a crop of grass early in the summer, by burning off fern and other growth The atmosphere yesterday over a long range of territory was decidedly smoky, whilst travellers along the roads' noted amid the bright yellow stretches of gorse, numerous little smoke columns as undergrowth was beino - fired.
