POWER BOARD GIVES £200 FOR ROYAL VISIT WITH CONDITIONS

In agreeing to allocate £2OO towards tne cost 01 the celebrations for the Royal visit, the Grey Power Board last night, added a proviso that an account be submitted tor any expense incurred tor lighting and power. Mr W. Clayton, who moved thmotion, said the Power Board was in a better position than most local Dudles and snould donate £2OO. Mr J. H. Stokes suggested that the Board put up the light and supply the power, and donate what remained. The chairman, Mr L. N. Downes, said that might oe too late. ivir eiayton said they could not say vvliat power and light would be used. Mr W. E. Pring said the Borough Council would spend all the money they gave them, and were talking ot spending £750 on fireworks. Mr A. L. McKay said it was not the Greymouth Borough Council which was seeking the money. It concerned all local bodies, and there had been too much criticism of the one body. Someone had to take the lead, and lhe Borough Council was that body. The allocations had been suggested by the Royal Visit Committee and the Board nail to decide whether it was going to give £2OO or not. Mr P. Blanchfield said they heard plenty of disparaging remarks about the gifts, but they had yet to hear that no one wanted the King and Queen to visit Greymouth. It was better to do things the right way than to make a poor show. Mr Clayton pointed out that the Board had to buy its power pay its employees, and put up the light. All they wanted was to recover their expenses. • , , , . Mr Stokes said that he had been informed by the Mayor (Mr F. F. Boustridge) that any local body incurring expenses could claim on the central Mr McKay said that if the central committee did the job correctly it would budget for extra expenses.
