Martial Law in Java’s Republican Capital

(Rec. 11.10). ■ BATAVIA, Sept. 17. (N.Z.P.A. —Reuter.) Martial law has been proclaimed in Republican Central Java city of Surakarta. This has followed a renewed outbreak of fighting there yesterday. Colonel Subroto has beerappointed as military governor. Observers in Batavia believe that the proclomation of martial law and the appointment of a military governor indicate that the Hatta Government intends to fulfil its warning that it would take firm measures against law breakers. Three Dutch soldiers were killed and one wounded. One was missing when a'Dutch Army patrol was ambushed on Wednesday, neai’ Malang, in East Java, ten miles inside Dutchcontrolled territory, state reports reaching Batavia. The ambushers are believed to be a Republican-Indones-ian gang.
