Orchids to United States by Air
Orchid merchants in Sydney, New South Wales, are planning to fay more than 200,000 orchid blooms to the United States of America in the next three months (September-November). Allowing fop a 15 per cent, wastage, they could earn more than 150,000 dollars for Australia. New Yorkerswill pay up to £1 (Australian) each for the Australian variety of cymidiums, sold at 8/6 each in Sydney. Each bloom costs Is air freight to San Francisco.
Sellers in Sydney say that by the time duty, agent’s commission and the cost of packing are deducted' from returns, Sydney dealers are left with little profit. They are hopeful, however, of building up the venture when methods of packing are improved. Best results so far have been obtained by despatching the orchids with stems in water-filled test tubes.
