Australian Radio Service to Have Frequency Modulation

(Rec. 8.10) SYDNEY, Sept. 15. Approval by t}ie Federal Cabinet of plans to introduce frequency modulation into Australia’s national broadcasting service, in the near future, has been announced by Rt. Hon. J. B. Chifley, Prime Minister, in Canberra. It is learned authoritatively, that the -Government intends, to give the monopoly of frequency modulation to the Australian Broadcasting Commission, and to exclude the commercial broadcasting stations from its use. Radio interests in Sydney describe the Cabinet decision as ‘-‘implementing a policy of the socialisation of the air.” Frequency modulation improves reception, but it reduces the range of transmission as compared with the amplitude modulation that is now in use.
