Pickled Pelts Drop in Price
The New Zealand Meat Producers Board advises that the sixth and final sale for the season of pickled sheep and lamb pelts under the Pickled Sheep and Lamb Pelts Emergency Regulations was held in Wellington before a representative bench of buyers. Offerings totalled 125 lots comprising 42,263 dozen sheep and 72,304 dozen lamb pelts. Prices generally showed a marked decline on those of the previous sale and indicated that buyers’ limits had been reduced by considerably more than the allowance to meet the effect of the reduction in the rate of exchange. Prices for sheep pelts were on average approximately 30 per cent, below those of the last sale whilst those for lamb pelts declined by approximately 40 per cent. The average prices for both classes of pelts were the lowest recorded at any sale during the period of operation of the Pickled Sheep and Lamb Pelts Emergency Regulations.
