[Our own Correspondent] HOKITIKA, Sept 7 A cattle truck was derailed on Monday morning at the Weld Street railway crossing, but was restored to the rails in half an hour. Week-end basketball results were: Kumara 9 v. United 7; Old Girls 14 v. Kumara 7; Westland Textiles 17 v. Tuis 1; United 7 v. Ross 7; Old Girls 12 v. Victorians 6; St. Mary’s 11 v Tuis 8; Westland Textiles 11 v School E 10. Golf club championship qualifiers are. —Gillespie, Thompson 168, Bryce 173, Wake, R. Hill 174, Schroeder 90 P. A recent survey disclosed that IS houses were in various stages of building in Hokitika, while many others were having additions and renovations effected. As a result of building activity, sections are now harder to acquire. An area becoming more popular is that to the east of Park Street, where, with increased building, drainage is being improved. The Housing Department will commence building in this area, consent having been obtained from the Borough Council to acquire an area sufficient to build close on 40 homes. This week a. number of men commenced repairing and renovating the Post Office. The two main doors have been removed, and the two inside doors have been replaced by a single door with an automatic closing spring. The main office is, being made more comfortable by the erection of some partitions. The renovations will be considerable, including painting and the office as a whole will be more hospitable during the interval until the new post office has been built. . The death accurred on Monday of a well-known and esteemed desident of Ross, Mrs Ella Constance Herbert She is survived by one daughter, Miss K. Herbert (Ross), and one brother, Mr Arthur Fendall. Another brother, Rev. Frederick Fendall, who was at one time curate in Hokitika, died some years ago. . ' Mrs Owens, of Kanieri, met with an accident on Monday evening through colliding with a dog on Kanieri Hill, where she was found beside her machine in an unconscious state by Mr C. Pfahlert. She was admitted to the hospital and her condition is improving. i. At the Magistrate’s Court judgment by default was entered in the following debt claims: G. Bryant v. R. Manzoni, £4 19s; R. C. Renton v. ( W. B. Williams, £97 9s Id; Renton Hardware Company, Ltd., v. W. B. Williams, £B2 13 s Id; K. W. Reece v. William Meadows, £5 (by consent). Four men were each’ convicted and fined 10s and 10s costs for being on licensed premises after hours. J. R McLean (Commercial Hotel) was fined £2 with 10s costs for exposing liquor after hours. Norman N. Reader was charged with operating a truck having inadequate lights. Mr M B. James, for the defendant pointed out that the information given had not taken into consideration, the change in regulation. The charge was withdrawn. Four owners of cattle were fined 20s with 10s costs for allowing them to wander. A youth, R. M. Baird, was fined £1 in each instance, with costs totalling £1 5s for having neither a light nor warrant of fitness for a motor-cycle involved in a collision on June 9, in which he was injured. , * Messrs A. Upjohn and N. Parker, and Miss N. Patterson, have return- ' ed to the Teachers’ Training College,
at Christchurch. Mrs C. Upjohn left yesterday . to spend a short holiday in Christchurch. Mining claims! were yesterday granted at the Warden’s Court afollows: —J. E.
