PROPOSALS FOR BOROUGH EXPENDITURE
Sir The Mayor estimates the amount of £1620 is to be spent on festivities connected with the Royal tour next March, and of this amount £5OO is to be contributed by the Greymouth Borough Council, without any guarantee 1 of a Government subsidy. If the council has this sum ol money to spend lavishly, I am sure overburdened ratepayers who. have to bump their way over the council s tar-sealed roads, particularly in High Street, would be justified in considering they are entitled to relief in this direction. Even more lavish is the proposed fireworks display, to the tune of £5OO, plus donations, and this at a time when daily one hears exhortations such as ‘‘Save food for Britain,” ‘‘Save a child,” “Save fat,” “Save coupons,” etc. The money to be spent so lavishly will not increase production one jot, nor will it do anything for the people of Britain, who, we are told, have their belts tightened up, ‘way past the last hole.’ nor will it help the starving children whom we were recently told, could be saved at the low cost of 4d per day per head. Finally, £5OO should restore the town clock to a position where a ratepayer or two may get an occasional glimpse of it. I am. etc., J. DENNEHY, Cowper St., GREYMOUTH.
