Tiie Greymouth branch of the New Zealand Labour Party, at its montnly meeting last evening decided to forward a letter to the ivimiscer or nuance, the Rt. Hon. W. The s.s. Holmlea which was ready to sail with coal for Wanganui on Monday, was delayed because two members of the crew had been arrested on charges of theft. The re-discovery of an extensive field of coal in the Murchison district was referred to by Mr Neale (Nat., Nelson in the House of Representatives. He considered that the report male by the Government geologist was made after a cursory examination. Although the Minister of Mmes Hon. A McLagan, had said that it. was of high sulphur content, Mr Neale held that only some of the coal came in this category and that other coal was equal in quality to that of the Liverpool State mine. Another report described the coal as being equal to the best bituminous coal in the southern hemisphere. Nearly 2000 tons of food parcels for overseas were sent from the Wellington area in the year ended June 30. This meant that on an average, 8,328 parcels were posted each week in the area of which Wellington is the main postal centre. Supplies of suitable coal are barely sufficient for the Dunedin gass works to produce 50 per cent, of the city’s needs. The latest information is that no immediate relief is likely and consumers will be rationed immediately on a vountary basis. If this is not successful the pressure will be reduced.
