Heavy Floods In Central Europe
GENEVA, September 5. Swiss troops blew up the dykes of the flooded river Rhone, which burst its dams, following. 24 hours of heavy rain, and flooded 60 square miles of the valley between Martigny and Sion. "Church bells rang during the night, warning, people to evacuate low-lying houses -and farms. The two main passes over the Alps into Switzerland were blocked and bridges were washed away. According to a Rose message heavy storms and landslides cut rail communications between Turin artf Genoa. The main rivers in north-west-ern Italy are steadily rising. Many bridg-es have collapsed and villages have been flooded. Heavy rains caused flooding in the French Alps. The river Isere burst its banks at several points and road communications were interrupted.
