LEAGUE FOOTBALL League Medal For C. McBride

Selected with Morrie Robertson of Auckland, as one of the two best League players in New Zealand, Charlie Mcßride of the Blackball Club has gained the “League News” Medal for 1948. The two selected players were required to possess personality, character, such as would . inspire younger players, place the game on a high plane, and mixing with all other players. They also needed perfect handling ability, without being selfish and the heart to do great things on the field, to give and take all that is comirig and also to be an inspiration to all other players. Mcßride who played in 24 matches during the Kiwis’ tour of England and France, was regarded as the best forward in England in 1947. He is only 23, weighs 14st. and is sft. lOiii. high. He played first for Marist at school and in the lower grades, and joined the Blackball senior team in 1944, in which year he first represented 'West Coast. He first played for the South Island in 1945. He played for New Zealand first in 194(3 against the Englishmen. LOWER GRADES Lower grade Rugoy League games at the week-end resulted: — Senior reserve. —Brunner 25, Blackball 12; Rapahoe 15. Ngahere 13. Lake Brunner won by default from Runanga. Fourth grade.—Runanga 21, Cobden 9; Kohinoor 38, Hokitika nil.
