Willie Turnesa, the youngest of the famous golfing family of seven brothers, to-day won the American amateur golf chamnionship at Memnhis. Tennessee, for the second time. He beat Ray Billows, a fellow New Yorker, 2 up and 1, in the 36-hole final. Turnesa, who won the British title in 1947, last held the American championshin in 1938. LONDON, Sept. 5. The Australian, Norman von Nida playing in his first tournament since an' operation for sinus trouble, won the Lotus £l5OO golf tournament' at the Royal Mid-Surrey course, Richmond. He had third and fourth rounds of 66 each, and his aggregate for the 72 holes, was 271. Dai Rees, with 273, was second, and Max Faulkner, with 275, was third, Von Nida’s performance was a splendid one. It was achieved amid storms, rain, thunder and lightning over a 6405yard course. Charles Ward won the Vardon Trophy competition for the golfer with the season’s lowest average, with 71.29 strokes a round. Von Nida was second with 71.35,- ar.d Dai Rees third, with 71.42.
