GUNNER CHRISP MYSTERY IS CLEARED UP
LONDON, September 3. The case of. "Gunner Chrisp” has now emerged into the British -newspapers, with.' tlje . .“Daily/ - Herald” ■claiming that- “Clirisp” himself denies all knowledge .-of ■’ the new identity bestowed upon him -by the War Office and the Royal Air Force, and the "Daily Mail”- confirms' the story that “Chrisp”' identified himself as George' Wallace, a missing Royal Air Force aircraftsman, while under gas in a dentists surgery. Both Air Force" headquarters and the War Office refuse to disclose the man’s present'- where*- aborts, stating that doctors have asked that he be protected from- inquiries. ■lt is believed, however, that- he has been working’ as a” window blearier. It is known that the missing- aircraftsman George Wallace formerly " lived in Birmingham and that:' he married there.
The Birmingham correspondent of the “Daily Herald” stated " that, he has actually' spoken to.. Chrisp (or Wallace), and the man himself described the story that he had identified himself as Wallace as * -"all poppycock.” * : Both Air Force Headquarters and the War Office, however,. after denying on Wednesday . that they had ever re-opened the matter, now state firmly' that ’ they are convinced that “Chrisp” is, in fact, Wallace. The Royal Air Force authorities state that they are ‘prepared’to take over. “Chrisp’s file from the War Office and invalid him out 'of the Royal Air Force under the name of Wallace,- though they added that the question of his gratuity would have • to-be considered in-view of the Tact that he has 4 already received gratuity payment from, the Army. WIFE RECOGNISES KIM (Rec. 10.50). LONDON, Sept. 6. ■ 'The serviceman ’ who lost his memory four years ago, known as “Gunner Chrisp” (his name in War Office records)' has discovered his real name. He-has done so--after the failure of claims from all parts of the world, including New Zealand and Australia, to establish his identity. He is a former ’ Royal Air Force man, George Wallace, whose .wife identified him at the week-end. 'Wallace, according' to the Daily Mail,- said: "To-day she sent me a message,' saying that she is satisfied that I am her husband; that she did not wish to see me,- and that there would be no point in our meeting”. Wallace, with the returning of.his memory, remembers that he was legally separated, some months before he joined the R.A.F.
