MARIST CLUB’S SUCCESSFUL SILVER JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS

Old Timers Win Over Present Team Favoured with exceptionally good weather, the Marist Rugby League Club brought its silver jubilee celebrations to a successful conclusion yesterday when more than 300 took part in a picnic excursion to Mitchells, alter attending a special Mass at St Patrick's Churcn, ceiebratea by tne Rev. Father J. Daly, Club Chaplain. All of the functions connected with the jubilee have been largely attended, and the club can look baOk upon che celebrations as a memorable event in its history. Six decorated floats took part in the procession' on Saturday afternoon from the Marist School to Victoria Park where the star attraction was the game between Old Timers and the present senior side. Flayers, officials, and members of the club, grouped in decades, took part in the procession which was led by rhe Greymoutn Municipal Band. The third grade team won the silver cup for the best float, a representation or “Key to Progress ot the Marist Club’’ whicn reflected great credit on the designers, 'ine juuge auu marshal of the procession was Mr A. j. Creaney. A feature of the procession was a penny-lathing bike nddenoy “Snowy’' Rochford appropriately attired, and a miniature model drawn by Archie Mundy, junior. The Old Timers caused much amusement by arriving at Victoria Park on a large motor lorry, all arcirea for tne matcn which provided some exceptionally good football. TIMERS' MATCH More than three full teams offered for the Old Timers' matcn, won by 21 points to 11. Present team was: A. Hines, K. Curnow, v. Meates, L. Dunn, L. Dargan, j. uurnow, i. uunn, B. rtochiora, F. Coll, F. Rush, J. Calder, and J. otOKes with J. Knapp and J. Meates suosntutmg. 1 The first Old Timers’ team was; E. Quinn, J. Kennedy, J. Roberts, J. uevonport, F. Doogan, E. o'Jtsrien, ‘r. O’Connor, N. Mouat, J. Beban, M. O’Brien, J. Calder, J. Dunn,’Ll. Delaney. This team failed to achieve success ana were aeieated oy o points to mi after a bright display. A pass to uoogan went astray when the latter len over, and tne present nacxs secured for V. Meates to run through lor an easy try. Meates railed to convert, then followed some really bright movements in wmcn the Old Timers threw tne ball aoout in nne styie. me pace started to teil to the extent one ot tne Old Timers repeateaiy asked the reieree to blow tne wtnstie. One or the easiest tries went astray when J. Roberts railea to reproduce past form alter Mouat had broken through, rhe ban went to K. Curnow who scored unopposed under the posts after a 3b yard sprint. The second Old Timers’ team was: R. Baird, P. Sweetman, J. Mathews, R. McQuinn, R. Pollock, W. Hopkins, S. Anisy, F. Grogan, P. Malone, P. Affleck, J. Pope, M. Power, and D. Pearson. 'Phis team produced some excellent form, the forwards and backs cony bining well. J. Pope showed some oi ms oid dash when ne broke away in the loose and went over for a nne try. Almost throughout the spell, the Old Timers kept their opponents penned in tneir own territory, and for some minutes pressed hard on their line. Again Pope broke away and beat Hines to pass to P. Malone for a try. Shortly afterwards W. Hopkins kicked a oeautitul penalty well out, placing Old Timers in the lead by 8 points to 6. , The third team then took the field. The players were: J. Devenport, C. Fraser, J. Knowles, E. Garth, A. Broome, B. Casey, J. Griffin, J. Calder, J. Beban, W. Moore. W. Mundy, D. Watson. Although Mundy hooked consistently, weight and age seemed to tell with this side, but they soon had the present team in difficulties, and what looked like a certain try by Beban was disallowed. V. Meates broke from half-way with J. Meates in attendance, and the latter scored and converted. Old Timers failed to make the most of their opportunities and the present team came through without having their line crossed, the score at the interval being 11 points to 8. BIG TEAM FIELDED Facing a deficit of three points, Old Timers put their first team back on the field for the last match, with the inclusion of Mouat as fourteenth man with a roving commission. Soon the> settled down in businesslike methods to overhaul the present players. Penalised fifteen yards out, present were in difficulties when Mouat took the ball, and instead of seeking a penalty, merely kicked it on his toe collectea. and dived right past Hines for a thrilling try which he converted amidst enthusiasm. Thus in the lead, Old Timers were determined to make a stand, and, without the referee, Mr C. Dewar, noticing what was going on the other piayers dribbled in two and threes on the field until finally the present team were faced with the formidable task of facing 32 players. The next two tries came quickly for Old Timers. Mouat, in a cunning move, opened the v-ay for Calder, who sent on to Casev for Roberts to score a try tvhich T. O’Connor converted. The last try came to P. Affleck who secured near a corner and dived over making the final score, Old Timers 21, Present 11. TROPHY DONATED

After the game Mr J. Mundy presented the Mundy Silver Jubilee trophy (a silver football) to the captain ox the Old Timers’ team, Mouat. on behalf of his brother and himself, who were the donors. In doing so he congratulated the Old Timers on their line showing? Mouat, replying said that the Old Timers had turned up in fine style “particularly in the last five minutes.” B. Rochford, captain of the present team also crongratulated the Old Timers on their turn out and their victory, remarking that “you put it over us.” Cheers were given for both teams by the very large crowd present at the match. The cup for the best float was presented by Mr Greaney to Mr S. Knapp, manager of the third grade team. After the match, Mr Mouat. on behalf of the Old Timers, handed the trophy to Mr A. Mundy with a request from the team that it should be kept by the Marist Club and used for some fixture which the Club could make an annual event
