CANTERBURY POTATOES ALL SURE OF STATE PURCHASE
CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 2 At present it was not proposed to reconsider the terms of the Government’s contract with potato growers, said the Minister of Marketing (Mr E. L. Cullen) when invited to comment on the position of potato growers in Canterbury, who have on their hands an unsaleable surplus of potatoes .estimated at 20,000 tons. The Minister said that the contract had been in operation for some five years with the same terms every year, and it had never been questioned before. “In the meantime, anyhow,” said Mr Cullen, “the conditions stand as they are under the contract.” Under the contract it is obligatory for the Government to take over all potatoes grown under contract remaining unsold on November 30. The potatoes must be of fair average quality grade. The price is determined by striking an average over the whole season. x . According to Christchurch potato merchants no price increments has so far been announced for September. In past seasons monthly increments have been made throughout the winter and spring months.
