HOCKEY WEST COAST LOSE TO SOUTH CANTERBURY

Gaining the bye in the first round for the Quatre Bras Cup, at Christchurch on Saturday, West Coast hockey representatives received a trouncing in the second round, when South Canterbury won by eight goals to one. South Canterbury’s fast, constructive hockey overwhelmed the West Coast side, which were down three goals at half-time. This was South Canterbury’s second successive win for the Cup, which is for competition amongst minor hockey associations in Canterbury and the West Coast. The teams were: — South Canterbury: D. Cullimore, P. Kortwright, W. D. Sloane, G. Felton, J. Andreassend, L. Buchanan, B. Millar, A. Boyd, J. Buchanan, T. Buchanan and. G. Annear. West Coast: A. Eatwell, E. Newton, D. Nimmo, E. Archer, P. Smith, M. Newton, J. Walsh, S. Hill, K. Kendon, P. Clarke and A. Boustridge. South Canterbury were first to attack and J. Buchanan netted with a first-timer. South Canterbury, led by Annear ,came back, Millar coming in fast to net. South Canterbury 2; West Coast nil. Then T. Buchanan slammed in a good one. Boyd scqred a pretty goal when he jinked in close to bear the keeper. Coast went down from the bully and Boustridge scored with a grand angle shot. Half time sounded with the score:—South Canterbury 4; West Coast 1. Eatwell made a couple of grand saves, but he had no chance when T. Buchanan banged one in from close range. He got another with a hot shot from well out. South Canterbury 6; West Coast 1. South Canterbury went further ahead when Sloane beat the Coast defender in a penalty bully. Boyd then engineered a goal when he tipped a short pass to Millar and the wing cut in to score from close range The final score was: —South Canterbury 8; West Coast 1. Umpires: Messrs E. H. Rogers and W. Morris.
