NGAHERE RETAIN CHALLENGE SHIELD
By defeating Cobden by 18 points to 7 yesterday, Naghere retained the Challenge Shield ,at Naghere. The game was not up to standard and Ngahere did not settle down early against a vigorous team which included seven reserve players. The outstanding player on the field was I .Marley (Cobden) and the best Ngahere players were McLennan and F. Mulcare (forwards') and Bernard (back). SOUTH ISLAND BOYS WIN South Island proved too strong for the West Coast fifth grade team, winning by 16 points to 4 after a very fine exhibition of football. The South Island team was (players being from the West Coast unless otherwise indicated): —J. Soster, C. Courtney (Canterbury), R. Broome, W. Cairney ,R. Forman (Canterbury, captain), R. Wilson (Canterbury), T. Harris, R. Ayson (Canterbury), B. Swann (Canterbury), M. Coleman, I. Barr (Canterbury), M. Burke, T. Brown (Canterbury). Emergencies: J. Kirkan (Canterbury), A. Woodham Canterbury. CANTERBURY BOYS WIN At Victoria Park on Saturday, Canterbury proved too strong ±or West Coast schoolboys winning by 16 points to nil after a fast and interesting game. The senior schoolboys representative trial match resulted in a win for Canterbury by 14 points to nil. CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 5. , Sydenham beat Hornby by 25 points to 10 in a game that settled the Rugby League Vivian Cup competition. Prebbleton beat F’ananui by 15 points to nil and Linwood beat Riccarton by 6 points to 4.
