TENNIS U.S.A. BEATS AUSTRALIA IN DAVIS CUP SINGLES
(Rec. 7.45) NEW YORK, Sept. 4 The United States easily won the first two singles in the challenge round of the Davis Cup against Australia at Forest Hills to-day, and is almost certain to retain the cup. Parker, playing in his top form, soon knocked out the bewildered Sidwell, and Schroeder, hitting his devastating best, after two sets, reduced Quist’s attempted come-back to a pathetic gesture. Quist has decided to partner Long to-morrow in an attempt to save the doubles against Talbert and Mulloy. There is some historical consolation in the fact that the Australians were down 0/2 in Philadelphia, in 1939, and they still won the cup. But they did not lose the first two singles in the shattering way they were taken from them to-day. Scores:— Parker (U.S.A.) beat Sidwell (Australia) in three straight sets.—b/4, 6/4 6/4. Schroeder (U.S.A.) beat Quist (Australia) 6/3, 4/6, 6/0, 6/0.
