Ballantyne’s Fire
WELLINGTON,, Sept. <5. Mr J. T. Watts (Opposition, St. Albans) asked in an urgent question in Parliament if the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr Parry, would inform the House whether the Government intends to introduce legislation to give immediate effect to such of the findings and recommendations of the Royal Commission into Ballantyne’s premises in Christchurch as relate to (a) the adoption of the standard code of means of egress by local bodies; (b) the immediate installation of fire-prevention devices and alarms in commercial buildings, particularly in Government buildIngs; and (c) commissioner control of fire brigades services of New ZeaMr Parry, answering Mr Watts, said the report of the commission was 1 now being carefully studied by the Government with a.view to giving legislative effect to such of its recommendations as was practicable to do so. As soon as the Government was in a position to make its. decisions on these matters, legislation would be brought down.
