SEAMAN FINED FOR CAR CONVERSION IN GREYMOUTH
When Constable W. M, Sherwin noticed a man attempting to start a motor-car in Mackay Street at 9.40 p.m. on Thursday he asked the wouldbe driver for his license and received the rather surprising, answer: “Don’t be silly. I haveffit got one.” The constable took the man into custody ana later he was charged with attempting co convert the car, valued at £250, the property of Basil James Mettrick. Charged before Messrs M. J. Fogarty and J. H. North, justices, in the Police Court yesterday, Nicholas Selloff, aged 20 a member of the Gabriella’s crew, pleaded guilty. Outlining the facts, Senior Sergeant R. C. Mcßobie said that Belloff was under the influence of liquor at the time. He had damaged the car to the extent of £9 7s including £7 for a new windscreen according to the estimate of Frank William Baty, and the Sen-ior-Sergeant asked that the court order the damage to be paid for. Belloff, native of Canada, had no fixed abode, and could go bacx to the ship. Stating that he was under the influence of liquor, accused told the court that he did not know, what he W Imposing a! fine of £lO and ordering t il cm...age amounting to £9 7s plu 10s costs should be paid, in default 14 days’ imprisonment, Mr Fogarty said that there was far too much car conversion going on, and the court took a sei’ious view of such cases.
