Vital statistics registered at Westport las’t month, with figures for the corresponding month of last year in parenthesis, were: Births 17 (15); deaths 6 (6), marriages 1 (6). There was an increase in the amount of revenue collected at the Westport Customs office in August, 1948, compared with the same month last year. The figures are as follows, with those for August, 1947, shown in parenthesis:— Customs £1,256 2s 9d (£1,325 15s lid); beer £1643 17s (£1355 12s 2d); sales tax £1657 18s 8d (£1572 14s sd); total: £4557 18s 5d (£4254 2s 6d). The funeral of the late .Mr. Stewart took place yesterday afternoon at Orowaiti Cemetery, leaving the residence of Mrs. Marshall, Romilly Street. Rev. H. Ford officiated. The pall-bearers were Messrs G. Plummer, J. Young, C. Orman and W. Watson. „ , „ The Westport White Star Football Club’s team left yesterday to play a match at Blenheim. With Mr v E. Hansby as manager, Mr. J O.’Neill as masseur and others, the party totals twenty-five in all. They will return on Sunday.
