HEAVIER DEMAND FOR FRESH MILK
WELLINGTON, Sept. 2. The local demand for whole milk, which increased by 70,000 gallons last year, was making big inroads in the production of butter, cheese and pigmeats, th e Minister 'of Agriculture, Mr Cullen, told the Dominion Dairy Conference to-day. This increase, he said, was sufficient for 35,000 pigs. New Zealanders, he added, could not turn towards a better food than milk. Butter graded for export for the year ended July 31 was 131,721 tons, an increase of about four per cent, on last year. Cheese at 82,669 tons, was an approximate decrease of three per cent. In view of drought conditions, he considered this production very creditable.
