Britain Wants Volunteers For Army
LONDON. Sept. 1. The War Secretary, Mr Shinwell, broadcasting. called for 100,000 additional volunteers for the new Territorial Army. He said the reduction in the Regular Army was based on the as-, sumption that the world would become peaceful. The possibility of trouble was now more likely. They must be ready for emergencies and must strengthen the Territorial Force to supplement the Regular Army. The Labour Ministry announced that 5,358,670-men and women were discharged from the British forces and auxiliary nursing services between the end of the war and July 31 last. Forty-nine thousand releases during July kept demobilisation well ahead of schedule.
