STALIN’S UNDERSTUDY DIES OF HEART FAILURE
Tributes Paid By Communist Leaders Received September 1, 9.0 p.m.) LONDON, September 1. M. Alexis Zhdanov, who was regarded as the logical successor to M. Stalin, is dead, says the British United Press correspondent at Moscow. M. Zhdanov, aged 51 was M. Stalm s closest* co-worker. He was secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and one of the prime movers in 1947 in the foundation ot the Cominform. - M. Zhdanov’s funeral will take place in Moscow’s Red Square on September 2. Reuter’s correspondent at Moscow reports five doctors signed M. Zhdanvo’s death certificate. They said that he suffered from high blood pressure, which was complicated by severe arterio-sclerosis. During the last few years he had had frequent attacks of angina pectoris, which were followed by cardiac asthma. His death followed from the paralysis of the morbidly-degenerated heart, accompanied by acute emphysema.' A British United Press correspondent at Moscow says: An obituary notice, paying a tribute to M. Zhdanov, and detailing his most important work, was signed by all of the Russian leaders, including M. Stalin and M. Molotov. His body is lying in state n the Hall of Columns in the House of Unions in Moscow. Thousands filed past it during the night. (Rec. 11.10) MOSCOW, Sept. 1 A special joint communique has been issued by the Soviet Government and the Communist Party regarding the death of M. Zhdanov. It states that he died on Tuesday, as the result of a serious illness.. It added: . “Comrade Zhdanov’s death represents a heavy loss for the party and for the entire Soviet nation.
