At the August meetjng the Koiterangi Women’s Institute held a debate in which advocates of the “Old Look” were judged to have the better of the advocates of the “New Look.” Competitions resulted.-7-Bloom Mrs Dimmick 1; Mrs Cropper 2; Mrs Amberger 3. Home made soap dish, Mrs Madsen 1; Mrs G. Havill 2; Mrs Cook 3. Washday apron, rMs W. G. Havill 1; Mrs Dimmick 2; Mrs Madsen 3. Next meeting will be on Thursday, when two members are being lareweiied. 'lhe Westianu Progress League (Hokitika) was advisee by Mr J. B. Kent, M.P., at its meeting that the Minister of Works, the Hon. R. Semple would call lor a full report on the pedvStnan waix oil the Arahura bridge once the engineer had completed tne survey, lhe question of the Rimu ous service u as discussed at some length, but it was agreed by the League that no action could be taken unless the people of Rimu, Woodstock and Kamen asxed the League to intervene on their behalf. The chairman said there was some merit in the points raised by Mr Rooney, but the Deague required the lull co-operation of the people who used the service. The later closing of outward mails from 3 p.m to 3.30 was discussed. The chairman said lhat no doubt staff shortages and other matters would be a deterent these days. The League resolved to ask Mr E. W. Heenan to discuss the problem with the Postmaster before proceeding further. Messrs H. C. Peart, G. Maunder, E. Taylor and A. Rooney were appointed delegates to the Westland League Council meeting to be held in Hokitika on Tuesday, September 7,. 7;>: Motor Service- to Christchurch': ' The Transport Committee of the League submitted a report on the proposed service. The license was coming up for review at the next sitting of the Transport Incensing Committee anjd the League decided not to take the matter further until the position was reviewed. It was agreed that a continual service could not be guaranteed, and with petrol shortages, it was difficult to ask for a new service. What was required said one member was a link up service from Hokitika to the present services operating from Greymouth. The Lincoln College report, was discussed and it. was agreed to give full support to the district' League. In the meantime, the Government was printing a booklet on soil and agriculture in Westland, and the other report could not be proceeded with. Members agreed thqt the booklet would be valuable to farmers on. the West Coasti/and copies would be appreciated. u . Radio oZR reported that to broadcast the time of the arrival of the Christchurch express while operating on restricted hours might lead to confusion. With a return to normal
hours, the question would be again considered. Members expressed their appreciation of the service being rendered by the Stationmaster at Greymouth and the radio station. The telephone service to Lake Mahinapua is to be given the earliest consideration. A question was asked the League if any mention had been made about the milling of timber adjacent to the lake. Mr Peart undertook to make some inquiries. The committee of the Lake Club he said did not know of the intention
