RUGBY FOOTBALL Southland Beat Hawke's Bay
P.A. ' INVERCARGILL, Sept. 1. Hawke’s Bay Rugby team were defeated by Southland to-day by 14 to 8 in' a bright game, playea in. perfect weather conditions. Southland, which fielded practically, a new back line, showed improved fpnn, and never seemed in danger of defeat. Outstanding players ror Southland were Harper ana Bennett in the back line and Robinson and Cameron in the forwards. T. Ingram and Small were prominent in the Bay backs. McCormick hooked well, and Fraser played a fine game in 'tne forwards. The first score was a penalty goal by Chapman for Hawke's Bay. At half-time, Southland led by 11. points to 3—a penalty goal by Webster; a try by Harper; and a try by Greedy, converted by e Webster. In the second half, Webster kicked a penalty goal for Southland. A. T. Ingram scored a try for Hawke’s Bay, which was converted by Chapman. ■
Canterbury Beat Poverty Bay P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 1 Canterbury beat Poverty Bay by 12 points to x 3 in_a representative rugby match at Lancaster Park to-day. The Poverty Bay players infringed frequently, obstruction, shepherding and jersey pulling being their main faults. It would appear, from to-day’s game, that Poverty Bay has little chance of beating Otago ’ for the Ranfurly Shield. For Canterbury, Vincent and Argus scored tries, McNally potted a goal from a mark, and Richards kicked a penalty. For Poverty Bay, McKenley kicked a penalty from 40 yards out.
