Naval Reserve Recruits
• AUCKLAND, August 31. The first Aucklanders to be enlisted in ■ the post-war territorial forces: of New Zealand were medically examined this evening. They are 12 petty officers and leading seamen who, after being demobilised from war service in the Navy have joined the Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve. They will act as instructors when the Auckland, division of the reserve is re-established next month. The recruits include petty officers with specialist qualifications in telegraphy, signals, gunnery and submarine detection. Ten of the men hold the Victorian Reserve .Decoration and were reservists before they began six years’ war service. They served in every theatre of war at sea, including Atlantic convoys and the major battles of the Pacific. One a yeoman of signals, was one of the last men to leave Singapore when it fell'to the Japanese. Recruiting the main entry of reservists will begin on September 13.
