“Mother Ma-Clinic!”

LONDON, August 29. The Bishop of Salisbury (Dr G. C. L. Hunt) quoted the following parody of the song “Mother Machree” in his diocesan journal this week; — I love the clean clinic which washed me with care, And the nursery school lady who tooth-combed my hair, And all the youth movements so toil worn for me. But mother, God bless her, she never sees me. “A generation or two ago”, commented the Bishop, “it was mother who watched over us, cared for our health, bought and cooked our meals, and taught us those ordinary domestic accomplishments. This spirit of service is one of the most valuable qualities we English possess. We cannot afford to let it die, even for the sake of social security”.
