SOUTHLAND’S SHORTAGE OF TANK WATER
P.A. WELLINGTON, Aug. 31. After a period of exceptionally dry weather ,for this time of the year, householders in Southland, depending on tanks for water supplies are in need of a good fall of rain. Some of these -tanks, particularly in the Collingwood' and Waikiwi areas of Invercargill, have been dry for more than two weeks, and the residents concerned have been carting warer for household requirements. Riverton and other towns in the province, without a water scheme, are also. faced with a shortage. The places now facing a water, shortage have been in a similar position before, but not at this time of the year. It is generally during the summer months that difficulty in maintaining a level in tanks is experienced. Spring weather was also experienced during August of last year, but at the end of the month a change occurred and the city was swept by a violent storm, described as one of the worst for several years. The rainfall for August was 1.28 inches compared with an average of 3.25 inches.
