FEAR OF RISING IN HONG KONG

(Rec. 11.10) HONG KONG, Aug. 31 A high army source here revealed to-day that the Hong Kong colony s Volunteer Defence Corps is likely to be activated shortly, for the first time since the war. * The source disclaimed fears of possible internal trouble in Hong Kong, although it was admitted that the authorities are keeping a keen eye on the situation. t Hong Kong is peaceful now, but anything could happen in this community in twenty-four hours. The Corps will be on a larger scale than in pre-war years with an air force section as well as an army and navy section.
Britain to Increase Pacific Fleet HONG KONG, August 30. The British Pacific Fleet will be returned to its former strength - soon as possible, according to the Commander-in-Chief, AdmirM Su Denis' Boyd, upon his. return fiom Tnnan following exercises with tne United States Western 'Pacific Fleet. The Fleet was reduced last October due to the industrial crisis, but Admiral Boyd said it was hoped within the near future to build up again to four cruisers and supplementary units, including destroyers and subAdmiral Boyd 'said J5 01 \ g would remain indefinitely the headquarters of the fleet. “There will be no weakening of our commitments on the China coast or in South-east Asia from Manila to Malaya, he said. "We shall fulfil all our old duties.”
